The excitement is building in our Zen Garden! Last year my 6th through 8th grade math students excavated a 25'x18' area lowering the ground level by 6 inches. It was long, sweaty and tedious work in the heat, but they were determined to meet their goal and complete the job. Once done we leveled the ground, pinned geo-cloth over the area and filled it will small pebbles of crushed concrete. This is the foundation for their Zen Garden. Most of my students had no idea what a Zen Garden is or its purpose until I showed them some videos, then they loved the idea! My students struggle with understanding how to control and be aware of their emotions. We felt this was a good idea to have a place where they could step back and cool off from their frustrations. I incorporated most of all their math lessons in the planing and building of their Zen garden. Students all of sudden were eager to work together, plan and design. They know Zen gardens need a water feature and plants to represent natures elements, so this is what I am asking for here. We have taken apart used pallets to build garden beds for the succulents and with your help we can fill them beautifully. The polished black rocks are for the base of the bamboo water fountain and to surround the existing palm trees. I am also asking for the solar powered panel and pump to further instill the power of reusable energy in my students. I am learning along with my students as we create and beautify our area, and to see them working together is my inspiration!
