In my classroom, the students face multiple disabilities, both emotional and intellectual. Often I hear complaints about the discomfort of sitting in a hard chair all day. Valuable educational time is lost with fidgeting, walking around the classroom, and emotional upsets that can be minimized with the furniture and resistance bands. The items I am hoping to obtain will not only provide comfort, but also serve as a way to let out extra energy or even distress.
The ball chairs and swivel stools force children to direct their kinesthetic energy to stay on the ball or stool, instead of tapping, biting fingernails or moving arms/legs. The resistance bands for the bottom of the desks will help a child calm himself by quietly moving his legs without distracting others. I envision less time spent in our time out area for cool-down periods and less time spent trying to keep kids focused with these special tools.
Not only would a ball chair prove to help academically, but also with controlling emotions. My students struggle to appropriately react to certain situations. I plan to set up a ball chair for bouncing and a resistance band to get out that extra energy in our cool down area. The possibilities seem endless with these tools!
