The materials that I am requesting for this project are read-aloud books that will enhance my student's understanding of science and social studies themes. We cover a range of science and social studies themes throughout the school year, but our classroom lacks books and resources that support these themes. The themes I focused on in this project are holidays around the world, wants vs. needs, families, community, baby animals, and STEM. Our school day is focused on literacy and math-oriented curriculums. Science and social studies subjects are not met with the same attention as other subjects. With quality read-aloud books students will have the opportunity to be exposed to science and social studies concepts in an engaging way. Read-aloud time in kindergarten is rich with learning. Not only are students being read too, but classroom discussions are also encouraged and supported during this time. Reading out loud to children and having classroom discussions during the school day is proved by many studies to have a high impact on student learning. Pairing science and social studies with read-aloud time is a huge step in giving science and social studies the attention it deserves and nurturing the interest of my class.
