I have selected high interest books that will appeal to my fifth graders. Some of the books address the trials of invention, others true stories of famous individuals who have made a great impact on the world. I chose some books that will help students make a connection to the Civil War, a large part of our curriculum in 5th grade.
The first week of school, one of my students asked if I had any books on the Holocaust, but he had already read the two that I had! I've included books to address this interest as well.
This year I will be teaching ELA to both of our fifth grade classes, and having books that they enjoy reading will help ensure their success. Graphic novels and stories about people from history that were their age helps them make connections that make them want to read more. A couple of years ago when I introduced graphic novels about the Civil War, two of my reluctant readers came up to me after finishing the first one and wanted to know if I had any others they could read!
