Reading a graphic novel allows students to literally see what they’re reading and provides a whole new level of academic discussion about how we perceive characters, plot situations, and connections to everyday life. This particular novel details the life of a young girl in a time of political revolution. Her true story of survival is inspiring and provides a glimpse into the life of someone with a completely different experience who can still teach valuable life lessons to seniors getting ready to take the leap into the real world. Students will participate in debates, integrate knowledge of history and politics, study art and symbolism, and compare the climate of the novel to our current life experiences.
