You'll never have to fight most children to play with their tablets, cell phones or handheld games. Unfortunately, the same thing can't always be said about a book. As a teacher, it's my responsibility to make learning and more specifically reading fun for my students. In my experience, when children are given text with characters who look just like them, their interest is piqued and their more willing to pick up a book and devour it cover to cover! I'd like to give my girls books with curly hair brown girls on the cover. I want my boys to see strong brown and tan boys overcoming obstacles and being examples for other children. I want to empower my students to be the best they can be while helping them to cultivate a love of learning and reading!
