The children of our class are truly remarkable. They are 6th-8th grade Special Education students who are Bilingual in Spanish and English. Our school is situated in a low income, urban neighborhood that is part of a very large public school system. While this initial description may seem bleak to the average observer, the students of our room are anything but bleak. My students come to school every day, eager to learn and ready to face the, at times, seemingly impossible wall of barriers that is set before them. The tendency for many is to see deficiencies in students like mine, but I am continually amazed by how much my students are able to do. In our room, we support one another as we strive for greatness. I value individualized and differentiated instruction, a sense of community, and positive support in my classroom and I believe that when this atmosphere is present, success is the natural result.
