Flexible seating gives students the opportunity to take ownership of their learning by allowing them to have the choice to sit where they choose. Currently our classroom has desks, a kidney table and a carpet where students choose from to work during independent work time. Students also have the option to find a spot on the floor if they choose, and I encourage them to use a book to work on top of as we complete our independent work. Since creating this space for our classroom, I've found that students are a lot more engaged. There's also been evident academic growth and increased self awareness promoting better decision making when they choose where they work. Having the tools to give students comfortable options to choose where they learn best, creates a safe space for students to own their learning and increases academic achievement. The stools give the option for students to work at tall tables and desks and can double as a seat to place anywhere else around the classroom. The cushions will serve as a versatile seating option, make seating comfortable wherever students choose whether it's a traditional seating option or somewhere around the floor. Also the exercise balls give those first graders that need shake a little or fidget a non distracting way to do so. They also increase posture which increases focus. The clipboards make learning anywhere and everywhere possible. Flexible seating will give our first grade class the opportunity to increase student engagement and focus which ties directly to primary academic success!
