Reading is the building block to most other subjects in school.... better comprehension is always my goal for each of my students. My students must have a book with them at all times and must-read every day. But I want so much more than that for my students. I want to "flip the switch" in their brains and help all my students LOVE to read! I want all my students to find books that they can learn from, books they love, books that make them giggle aloud, books to help them through difficult times, books to help them imagine new worlds, and books that will help them stand by or further form their opinions and values. I want to instill the joy and love of reading a good book so that they will continue to make time in lives to read. In choosing these new books, I poured over each book title, monitored reviews, and read synopses to address the unique needs of my students. I chose books for self-directed learning as well as titles that are for sheer fun! I wanted to bring the classics to my classroom in a new way through comics and manga. Additionally, I hope these new titles will inspire my diverse group of students to learn empathy for the lives of others. These books will be housed in my classroom library, so they will be checked out by students on a daily basis to take home and enjoy. I have started a Recommendations Area in my room, so students can keep each other excited and reading. My goal is to build a strong reading culture so my students beg for more silent reading time, just to sneak in a few more pages.
