Almost all of my students are from low-income families and often do not have the time, the resources, or the safe space to get absorbed and enthralled by a story. In school they read quite often, but it is usually dry and academic. While I certainly want to teach my students how to think critically and factually like Historians, I also want them to see that History has many diverse narrators and that History involves real people like them, not just kingdoms, empires, and countries. I plan to use these books to create a library of historical fiction books and graphic novels, some of which will be integrated directly into my curriculum and some of which will be available for students to enjoy during free reading time. By reading and experiencing the lives of others around the world, my students will improve their reading skills, engage in historical settings, and gain a greater understanding of people's history around the world. In these books, I want them to both see themselves and to see people who are different from them, meaning I want to build a small library of books from many different perspectives and in many settings. Your generous support is much appreciated by me and my students!
