With the raised garden beds that I have my eye on, my students, both the preschool students and the high school students, will have the opportunity to explore gardening. While working in the garden beds, the "big" students will learn to promote and encourage the development of social, emotional, physical, and cognitive skills in the "little" students in a hands-on and meaningful way and build a deep appreciation of nature. Academic concepts can be introduced and reinforced in real-world and meaningful ways. Gardening with children is full of teachable moments in the areas of science, math, language development, and provides a calming activity for children of all ages. The products of our gardening projects can encourage good nutrition and provide a sense of accomplishment as well as an appreciation of nature. I am very excited by the possibility of having donors contribute to make this project a reality for 24 preschool children and 110 high school juniors and seniors.
