Students who feel comfortable and at home in their classroom space will be more engaged and this gives them the opportunity to take ownership over the space. So far in my classroom, I have implemented several flexible seating options such as a table for students who prefer to stand when they work, as well as a short table so students may sit while they work. We push our students to be creative and think outside the box, so why should their classrooms be cookie cutter copies of each other.
Giving students choice promotes personal agency towards their education. The goal is to allow students to pick and choose the methods and conditions that allow them the easiest path to their own success, and for them to take ownership of their learning. Often times, the harsh rigidity of the classroom prevents students with a history of trauma and students with special needs from being most successful. I intend to have a classroom where every student feels like their individual needs are being met, and with your help I hope to make that a reality. In my classroom, every student is welcome.
Organization is another tool that can be leveraged to help students to find more stability and to feel comfortable in a space. The classroom mailbox will give students access to more systems that can help ground them and relieve anxiety. The posters can also help with giving the students the systems they need to find success. With these tools being set around them in an aesthetically pleasing way they will know where information can be found, and that is one fewer thing for them to stress about.
