To support students in middle school who have struggled with math their entire time in school requires a concrete understanding of the math concepts. When the concepts are tangible, not abstract, the students begin to make connections between how numbers work together and the algorithms and rules of math they are taught. Many of the math tools like the fraction and factor tiles allow students to physically touch the factors with their matching colors to make comparisons and bring arithmetic properties to life, like commutative property of multiplication and simplifying fractions. The geometric nets provide opportunities to students who struggle with all of the rules of area, perimeter, volume, and surface area to derive their own formulas and compare them to established rules. The two color spinners support the understanding of all operations with integers. The spinners support students working in centers with directions and teacher printed mats, and game boards created with the color printer. The games like Yahtzee support the understanding and application of probability and statistics in a fun way. The checkers, chess, and backgammon boards, become rewards for hard work and incentives for deep thinking by offering students fun opportunities to deepen how they create strategy and understand thoughtful processes of how to win. The place value flip stands support students' understanding of the base ten number system and just how different one digit can affect a number's value, including decimal values. The dry erase markers are used for whole class discussions, relays, and center work in conjunction with our dry erase, desk boards. The students really enjoy using the boards and markers to show work, ask questions, and practice before recording work on paper. We run out quickly. The card stock, white and colored support the teacher's creation of centers and additional hands-on materials.
