In my 7th grade Life Science classes we create a portfolio each marking period of just about EVERYTHING we do in class. These notebooks are called Interactive Science Notebooks aka the ISN. In order to create some of the most eye catching notebooks, my students need 4 single subject, 70 page, spiral notebooks; one for each marking period. For each unit, we bring science to life with a variety of colorful foldables, flap books, charts, graphs, and reflective writing. This requires lots of color paper and glue dots to adhere some of the awesome manipulatives to the pages of our notebooks. In addition, we bring science to life in our classroom by hanging our science vocabulary words all around the room, but who wants boring black letters on white paper? Not Mrs. Jackson's junior scientists! We want vibrant colorful words which is why we need the color ink for our classroom printer. The Interactive Notebook is a researched based strategy that allows students to be creative, independent thinkers and writers through authentic assignments that allow them to display their understanding of topics in their own unique way. Donating a couple of reams of color paper, a few color pens, some glue dots and printer ink is all we need to bring science to life!
