I recently did a professional development class on the teaching the Holocaust, and have decided to incorporate their timeline activity in to my class. I already teach the second part of the Maus series, which focuses on Auschwitz, the Death March, Dachau, and Liberation. Maus I offers a perspective that many students don't get: life as the Nazis rose to power and oppression of the Jews began. Maus I begins before Hitler is appointed Chancellor and takes the reader through 1944. I want to use this book to give students a better understanding of that part of the Holocaust, the ability put events into their historical context, and knowledge about life in the ghettos.
