Having a classroom pet builds a sense of responsibility in students. They develop empathy by caring for the pet and an increased awareness of the needs and feelings of others. They learn to respect their environment and become enthusiastic about coming to school. This project will allow students to gain all of these social skills while also helping students learn about aquaponics. Students coming from low income families often don't have the opportunity of having pets at home. This project will allow them to get the benefits of having a classroom pet. They will be able to experience what it's like to have a pet. At the same time the water garden will allow them to visually see aquaponics in action.

About my class
