The 'Calm Choice Corner' will be a safe space in my classroom to be used to help students with special needs and emotional disabilities regulate their emotions in order to cope healthily and get back to a state in which they are able to process their feelings. It is my hope that in teaching my students how to recognize when negative emotions are escalating, they will send themselves to the Calm Choice Corner, giving themselves a safe brain break to help regulate their emotions so that they are able to then safely and effectively address their feelings in an appropriate manner and return to class. There is a little nook in my classroom that is completely open to the classroom but has 2 inch thick walls on two sides, making it open but private at the same time, and I envision the perfect Calm Choice Corner in this space. The bean bag will provide a feeling of both safety and comfort as a student sinks into it. The walls will be adorned with sensory choices- one wall covered in reversible sequin fabric and one wall clothed with bubble wrap. There will be a bin of manipulative sensory items, and a bin of sensory items for visual stimulation and relaxation. A sound machine with headphones to help promote calm body and calm thoughts and regulate emotions will be available. A visual timer will help them track their calming time and help set appropriate guidelines/boundaries for the Calm Choice Corner.
