Adapting books with visuals introduces a whole new world to students who have difficulty with reading, comprehension, speech, and cognition. I will be able to bring the story to the level of each child within the same story time period. Students are more engaged when they can interact and use hands-on activities. Providing visuals is one way to give a voice to the voiceless. Many of my students are non-verbal or minimally verbal and some use assistive technology to speak. These students speak through a visual language and need these visual supports to interact with their peers and engage in the academic setting. Providing visuals allows students to interact with the story and answer comprehension questions regardless of their cognitive, speech, or language abilities. The books I have selected are visually appealing, engaging books that I will be able to adapt for each of my students to help participate in Speech-Language Therapy inside and outside of the classroom.
