Many students with special needs have sensory needs that effect their ability to learn in the classroom. Many parts of the school environment are overstimulating and can cause students with sensory needs to become distracted or even bring on maladaptive behaviors. My students have a variety of sensory needs and having a variety of sensory materials on hand can not only make them feel calm and comfortable when they otherwise would not be, but also allow them to focus on their learning instead of the sensory stimulation that may be overwhelming them.
