Too often, my fifth-grade students lack skills in spelling, vocabulary, and grammar in their daily reading and writing skills. They truly do not understand how to use a dictionary properly. While technology has made it easier to locate the spelling of words and their meanings, I encourage my students to use printed dictionaries to redevelop skills in using printed resources as a reminder to look for a deeper understanding of words including synonyms, antonyms, and words used in context. Using these dictionaries daily through collaboration in small groups, as well as individually, will increase their skills needed to be proficient readers and writers! In addition, using dictionaries will better prepare them for challenges they will encounter in middle and high school when they are required to write more intensive papers including using research.
