My town is very small and almost entirely white. Many students have never been out of the state even by the time I see them in middle school. While I would love to travel the world with them and show them how people live elsewhere, that is impossible, so, to me, the next best thing is traveling through a book. Without leaving the country, careful readers can learn about far away landscapes and cultures in the pages of a book. Based on a true story, A Long Walk to Water will expose my students to a reality they may have never imagined before.
