At my school, students come into my classroom to experience making music in a way that allows them to work together effectively and safely. Throughout the day, they are exposed to highly emotional experiences. Drumming allows them to put aside their differences and work together to create works of art. By donating to my project, my students will be opened up to a whole new world, where someday soon they may be able to have opportunities such as band and orchestra. My dream is to build a music program where my students will have the same opportunities as a typical public school and to have an outlet that they may not have otherwise experienced. Drumming will be an introduction to instrumental music by teaching notation, rhythm, dynamics, balance, and overall what it means to be a part of something bigger than oneself. Creating a basis for instrumental music can then open up opportunities for more advanced musical skills. Perhaps someday these same students can participate in marching band and support our football team, perform concerts, or even create chamber ensembles such as string quartets or woodwind quintets. World drumming will be a new modality to learning the musical concepts and fundamentals that they work so hard each week to understand.
