Social-emotional learning often takes a backseat in the classroom because academics are the most pressing part of the school. However, students cannot learn effectively without first taking care of those social-emotional needs. A student who leaves the classroom because he or she does not know how to cope when something becomes difficult is certainly not learning math or literacy or science. My hope is that with these books and writing prompts, I will be able to teach my students how to develop appropriate coping skills so that they can be successful in and out of the classroom. The books and writing prompts, as well as the posters, will foster an understanding of a growth mindset which should help my students to learn that perseverance generates positive outcomes. The sand timers will be used to help students visualize time as they learn to regulate their own emotions while they take short breaks to calm down and reset.
