This is a fantastic novel about students who are very similar to the students in my classes. Many of them come from difficult backgrounds and limited means. The Freedom Writers Diary sends a great message about empowerment and self-confidence! Many of my students are struggling readers who absolutely are reluctant to read a novel. I feel that this novel is one that they can really connect with and will engage them in higher level thinking. I would love to be able to gift these books to this year’s class so they have something to take with them after our study of the novel. It would be something they would remember forever!
