My students are so excited to represent their school in team sports. Several have been asking me when can we play other schools, and when can we have a soccer team, or softball team. Fortunately, we have been able to establish a school basketball team that will compete against other district wide schools. Our facility is small and we are in need of jerseys and equipment. However, the students and student athletes are so excited about the team and our teams. Last season our athletes showed incredible gains in behavior and in the classroom when we started basketball. It has proven to be a catalyst for learning in all areas. The athletes are learning that grades and sports go hand in hand. This has given them more purpose and energy towards their education. My goal is to teach my students and student athletes the importance of teamwork and how to lose, having organized school sports is a big help in accomplishing our goals.
