As a special education teacher, one of the primary struggles we face is encouraging children to read. I (and lots of research) have found that culturally enriching, socially enhancing, and imaginative books are extremely influential in teaching children with specific needs how books can change their mindset and their lives. Additionally, these are books their classmates may have already read and therefore offer my students an opportunity to have more in common with their peers. Especially as a new teacher finding and funding books for my classroom have been difficult. My goal is to help my students grow at least a grade level and a half in reading ability this year. This means we need lots of engaging content to keep their interest in the hard work we will be doing. Many of these books will be read aloud in the classroom which is sometimes the only way my students can access grade-level content!
