In our Core Literacy class we have been reading about WWII and Nazi Germany. They students have learned about how children were affected and what it was like for the children in Germany, Russia, Poland and other countries. We have read the first two books in a series by Marsha Forchuk Skrypuch. 'The War Below' is the third book in the series and my students looked up the information and asked if we could read the third book.
We are able to use geography when we learn about the countries that were involved and affected by the war. The students will be using their writing skills also with summary activities. They also will be working together and having great discussions with different questions. While reading they are learning so much about how war affects children and they will use critical thinking to see what caused the war and how things can be done differently so that history doesn't repeat itself.
The second book, 'The Fourth Stall' is a fun and silly read. Every once in a while we just need to laugh and imagine how we would run a business from the fourth stall of the restroom at school. This book is a great one for the students that don't enjoy reading as much to see that reading is fun and enjoyable! Having a variety of books is so important to have in a classroom.
