I have three 5th grade ELA classes. I teach 65 kids a day. Most of my students do not have access to new and interesting books at home. By the 5th grade, if they aren't already a fluent reader, they probably don't enjoy reading. I have one more chance before they transition into middle school to help them build a love for reading. It's very important to have interesting books that they want to read. We also have online reading comprehension assignments that are individualized for their independent reading level. They do these weekly assignments because it is part of their grade but they end up enjoying the online articles and challenging themselves to do more when they have incentives that they work for. We have different incentives at various levels so that every child feels successful.
