My students represent the diversity that has made us the melting pot. My students have a kaleidoscope of skin colors. Most of my students come from families affected by poverty with almost 80% of them receiving free or reduced lunches. Our school does not collect school fees as most cannot afford them. Additionally, very few bring in necessary school supplies. Because of the financial situation in our district, teachers receive no classroom money. Fortunately, most of our students recognize the importance of education. Our attendance rate is consistently in the upper 90%. Our students work hard to overcome the obstacles in their lives: poverty, single parent homes, undereducated parents, and the stigma of attending an inner-city school. They strive for success and work hard to achieve it.
