I am a special education teacher for grade kindergarten through fifth grade! I am currently working on expanding my bare/lonely library shelf in my classroom! My shelf is lonely! I’m making it a point to include books with people of color. Growing up, I remember not seeing many books with people that looked like me. I will also be using many of these books during distance learning- I plan to do story studies as well as novel studies! Some story/novel studies we will be using are: Junie B Jones, Henry & Mudge, Roald Dahl, and Nate the Great. I hope that also giving my students with learning disabilities and special needs the opportunity to look at books with characters they can relate to will help spark an interest in reading. I want them to grow to like and love reading, but they can’t do that if they don’t see exciting books on the shelf!
