All of these books speak about children who have lived through adversity and thrived. They are about resilience and determination. These books are also about acceptance of each other which is essential to teaching in our ever growing adverse society. These books are reflective of the population of refugees that I teach and will encourage them to continue to fight for a better life. These children come from families who are determined to improve their families’ lives and sometimes it can seem overwhelming. It is good for them to read about other children who have been in similar situations. A Long Walk To Water, based on a true story, will help me with students speaking and writing about their own personal experiences, and sometimes traumas, in their home country. Harbor Me is about creating community with other students who have personal and familial struggles with immigration, homelessness, poverty and parents in prison. Hidden Figures is a non-fiction Book that speaks of rising above degradation to achieve your personal best. Bud, Not Buddy speaks to never giving up and The Watson's Go to Birmingham speaks about facing your demons and believing in yourself when others choose to see you as less than. All of these books speak to resilience and determination which are the themes of our district this year.
