The use of drills is an almost daily activity in my classroom, especially in technical theater. Using a practicum-style approach to technical theater, students are on their feet everyday and working on construction and deconstruction projects. The drills allow them to do the work efficient while learning to use tools that will provide them with career-ready experience. What has become a problem (a good one) is that I have more students then I do tools. So many in fact that sharing between two or three students still leaves students without tools. We need to have multiple groups working on separate projects and lack of tools causes an issue where students are provided equal learning opportunities. My goal is to have enough drills that students can work in pairs rather than in quartets so that the learning can go deeper and class room projects will be more efficient.
