Many of my special needs students are Autistic Elementary School students mainstreamed in the regular classrooms. Many of them are not oriented and stay in their own world often emotionally upset and unsettled by the sensory stimulation in a regular classroom. Often, sitting for a 45 min. Math, English, Reading, Science or Social Study lesson is too much for them to tolerate without a sensory break. Many of these students crave deep pressure, movement, hands-on activities, soft items, spinning, touching everything they come in contact with. Often they have significant difficulty socializing with other students because of their differences. Some of my students are students who survived a difficult birth, were failure to thrive, or may have been the product of an alcoholic or drug user or they have been abused and now are in a regular classroom experiencing significant difficulties trying to cope with all their special needs. They are making progress and willing to try their best.
