The flexible seating classroom is one in which traditional seating charts are replaced with seating arrangements that allow the students to sit where they choose. One of its principal objectives is to reduce the number/duration of sedentary periods of time, which research has identified as a danger to health. Studies suggest that children who participate in short bouts of physical activity within the classroom have more on-task behavior, with the best improvement seen in students who are least on-task initially. The students that come to me are very active, and sitting at a desk can be difficult for some of them. Giving them a chance to move around the room and bounce on a ball while learning is a fun way to reduce fidgeting, get the "wiggles out" and provide an outlet for excess energy. When used as a seat, the stability ball encourages kids to build a healthy posture and improve balance while the constant ball movements increase blood flow to the brain, improving focus & concentration. The Surf Portable Lap Desk/Laptop Stand/Writing Table will also benefit students who perform better when they get to choose where they want to work within the classroom. Students will no longer be constrained to a stationary desk when they need to write or type, which allows them to be comfortable, and therefore more engaged in their learning and productive in their work.
