My students have severe and profound disabilities. Most are non-verbal and all are ages 14-22. Many of my students are medicated and have behavioral issues such as: hitting themselves or others, eloping and stimming. Stimming involves repetitive behaviors such as hand-flapping, twirling, rocking, head-butting, and meaningless repetitive self-talk. But stimming is a behavior common to most developmental disabilities. Kids with Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, Angelman syndrome and other conditions can stim. My overall dream is to instill a sense of "a home away from home" when they step into my classroom. A place where they feel welcome and loved and cared for. I teach Life Skills and am grateful for this opportunity to make it happen for them.
