Kids Can Sew is a program I want to introduce to my students. This is a program that will be an extension to their art curriculum that be presented as an additional enrichment course. Students learn various medium in art from pencil drawings, charcoal, painting, and sculpting.
In 21st century education, we are really moving into a project-based learning concept. This provides room for students to problem solve and apply the various skillsets from math, science, technology, and art. My goal is not to make the students expert tailors, but allow them to apply these skills to create items that are tangible and reflect their lifestyle. To understand that the information that is learned is applied daily from the food they eat to the clothes that they wear.
Sewing is a skill set that is not taught much today, but is something that many parents inquire about. They too understand the opportunity for their child to develop their fine motor and cognitive skills. I am always excited to introduce the sewing to my male students because many of them have a genuine interest in tools and gadgets. I know that program will stimulate the creative minds of students.
