One of my favorite things to do while teaching is to give my students skills and information that can help them throughout their life. Personally, I love to read and I can attest to how reading has enhanced my life. Once I started looking into the benefits of daily reading (higher test scores, improved vocabulary, increase in empathy) I knew I wanted to find a way to encourage independent reading in my students. So this year I'm setting aside the last fifteen minutes of each class to allow students to read a book of their choosing. This is my second year teaching so I do have a classroom library set up however, my students would love access to more books. Specifically the books that I'm asking for have all already been requested by students. "All The Bright Places", "The Program", and others on my list are great for allowing my psychology students to see how mental health can affect people. While the "Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing" will give my World History students an inside look into one of the most revolutionary times in the world. Many of my students can't afford buying books for pleasure. Also our high school is the largest high school in our area. This means that the popular books are in high demand at our school library, and there is often a long waiting list. Helping with my project will directly put books into the hands (and minds) of young men and women.
