Student will analyze foot traffic patterns and then develop the best traffic pattern for bike traffic flow on the playground. They will set up traffic signs that resolve issues in the flow based on scenarios presented by the teacher. Students will map out the best path to travel on in order arrive at different activities along the perimeter of the playground’s bike route.
Scenarios are designed to help students problem solve anticipated traffic issues based on maps. After establishing a traffic pattern students will solve problems that arise. Students will act out the scenarios using the tricycles , and traffic signs in this microcosm of the school community. For example: Joan wants to arrive at the monkey bars? Which is the shortest route to get there? Draw a line to show the safest route from basketball hoop to the monkey bars. What issues will she run into along the way. Compare your plan with your classmates. Which is the safest route to get there? Students will act out the scenarios. Their pictures will illustrate the variety of detours needed to arrive at the same place. The activities will end with the students acting out the scenarios.
These lessons will be in alignment with the Virginia Milestones for Child Development:Cognition and General Knowledge Strand.
Student will directly apply theses objectives in class and on the playground. Learning through play is essential to the preschool child.
