The two science lab kits and the math manipulatives will be used in small groups (labs) to provide multi-sensory access to the subject matter. The science lab kits will be used within two units cellular organisms & cells as well as sustainability. These science labs will give students another modality to the inquiry-based approach that I strive to build into these science lessons. They give students authentic, hands-on opportunities to practice the vocabulary, concepts, and skills of two science units. Students will be able to visualize and practice the application of the water cycle to sustainability as well as the application of cellular structure to medicine through gram-staining of bacterial cells. Both experiments promote inquiry and multi-sensory, real-world application of the concepts studied in these units. My students need modeling and the ability to represent concepts in multiple ways. These math manipulatives will help students visualize the otherwise abstract concepts of operations involving integers, fractions, decimals, and percents! When used in small groups in a collaborative and applied fashion, these manipulatives will help promote inquiry in mathematics!
