Take yourself back to when you were ten years old. You would sit in your classroom for 8 hours a day...sometimes, that 8 hours seemed to go on, sometimes for what seemed like forever. All you could think about was how you just couldn't seem to get comfortable in that cold, hard chair. If only you had a cushion or a pillow. Maybe even the chance to recline. Or the opportunity to get up and stretch. How could you possibly think about what the teacher was saying?? My active group of fourth graders would benefit greatly from having a selection of seats to choose from on a daily basis. In 8 hours, I see: --Little legs that are constantly moving, shaking, and tapping --Bodies are rocking back and forth in chairs that have four legs (but never actually seem to have all four legs on the ground at once!) --Impulsive needs to stand and bounce every few minutes By having this freedom to choose their own type of seat, students are purposefully making a plan for their daily learning! From wobble stools to stability cushions, balance balls to stadium chairs, students have a greater chance of finding a solution that works for them and allows them to focus on learning, not discomfort. There is power in the freedom to choose. Thank you for your support!
