As a first year teacher, I have been scouring thrift stores and library book sales for books to fill up my classroom library for my upcoming class of 6th grade students. My students will engage in independent, choice reading for 20 minutes of each class period. Students will be given the opportunity to "check-out" books, graphic novels, poetry etc. from my personal classroom library so that they can learn that reading can be enjoyable, relaxing, and help them learn more about themselves, others, and their interests. Middle school is a crucial time for developing students' interests and respect for literature. Reading about the adventures, struggles, and learning of just one character that they relate to can change the way an adolescent views themself, others, and the world around them. These books and series will help students develop confidence, empathy, and curiosity for the different people and experiences of our world and most importantly, will help them find the joy in reading!
