I have used Scholastic's Upfront News magazine as a classroom resource for my students for about a decade now. The articles are written on a reading level that is very accessible and the online supporting resources also make it possible for me to adjust the Lexile level for my students. Each issue is also rich with infographics that support data literacy skills. Students love to read about what's going on in the world and enjoy the engaging style of the magazine. Every year, they tell me that they look forward to the latest issue and the activities we do based on the articles are some of students' favorites. The articles give us real-world examples to work with as we work on reading comprehension, analytical writing, data literacy and critical thinking skills. I especially like the articles in each issue that pose an ethical dilemma and a question to debate. These features generate such good classroom discussion and high levels of student engagement! They often learn without even realizing it! While Scholastic's Upfront magazine is an amazing teaching tool, it is rather expensive at a cost of approximately $10 per student. I am seeking funding for a classroom set for this year. Thank you for considering supporting my efforts to provide this resource for my students.
