History classes have changed. Students are no longer sitting at their desks, writing notes off the screen, memorizing dates and events, and listening to lectures. My students are required to analyze primary source documents like the Declaration of Independence and Thomas Paine's Common Sense. Analyzing documents help students draw their own conclusions about the events they are reading about. These are skills students will use throughout their education and life. There are many words in those documents that they do not know. New student dictionaries will help them learn new vocabulary, not only from the historical documents but for other secondary sources. I do not have appropriate dictionaries for my students to help them search words they do not know.
