All of the research I've read about developing the reading skills of high school students highlights the merits of choice and reading outside of class. My idea is to create Book Clubs for my ninth grade English students using four engaging titles. Many of my ninth graders are developing readers. They need encouragement and time to read the books they love. Our book clubs will provide book choices and small group time for them to process what they read at home. My students are reading at different levels, with over half reading at grade level. By having a range of choices, they will be able to read books that fit their reading abilities.
