Most of my students are asylum seekers. They escaped their home country and came here to start over. I believe that the best thing we could give these children is education. All of them are very happy and eager to part of our country. They are excited to be attending school, some of them for the first time. My job as the 4th and 5th grade ESL teacher is to help them have a smooth transition by teaching them English, but they need school supplies to start off the new school year. They need basic supplies that will be used on a daily basis. I have requested items like notebooks, pencils, and crayons. These supplies will be used in individual work, small group work, and whole group work. Our usual routine is as soon as they arrive in school early in the morning, they use the computer with programs like Lexia and iReady to learn phonics, vocabulary and the different reading skills that are adapted according to their language level. At the end of the day, we do centers where groups do reading, writing, grammar and computer (Lexia/iReady) activities. We need mice and earphones/headphones to be able to listen to the sounds of the letters (phonics) and the pronunciation of words (phonics/vocabulary). Using a word-to-word dictionary help them understand the lessons, homework, and tests. We really need your help to make life and learning easier for these kids!
