My freshman team is developing an integrated unit entitled, ‘Becoming My Best Self’ in which students will become aware of their strengths and challenges and how those are related to reaching their potential, realize the connection between choices and consequences and taking control of their own ‘destiny’, develop social and cultural consciousness, and learn the powerful influence of attitude. We will take a field trip to Portland, Maine where students will interview business people of diverse industries about their experiences in overcoming adversity and achieving success, and visit Southern Maine Community College for a guided tour of the campus and glimpse how good habits and choices, even now as young freshmen, matter to their future. In English class, students will examine habits for success as they read chapters of texts, including How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie, and How Rude! The Teen Guide to Good Manners, Proper Behavior, and Not Grossing People Out by Alex J. Packer. Finally, they will present selected habits they believe will help them best aspire higher and become their best selves. Being mindful of habits for success should not end at the end of a unit of study; that mindfulness should transcend it and be a part of everything students do all year. I would love to purchase a class set, plus a few, of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey that students can incorporate into not only this integrated unit, as they interview business people and college representatives on their field trip, but also into their entire freshman year. I am asking for ‘plus a few’ because when some students ask if they may take a copy home to read, I will be overjoyed to say, “Of course!”
