Imagine having to sit quietly in a chair for hours. Sounds like torture? It is for many of our children; yet, we expect them to learn when they are itching to move. Forced stillness does not meet a basic student need. Movement engages the brain, endorphins fire off synapses, the brain responds with increased focus. Offering seating that increases attention will help to ignite their desire to learn, to delve deeper into the subject matter and to expand their thinking. My Gifted students get only one day a week in Gifted Resource; therefore, it is important to maximize the time we spend together. Fidgeting and wiggling in an acceptable way, in a structured environment will eliminate behavioral issues that detract from learning. Who has time to act up in class, when you're allowed to bust a move while you're thinking? Let's wobble our way to wisdom!
