I want the posters on the wall, the books on the classroom shelves, and the curriculum being taught to help children feel a sense of community and belonging within the walls of our classroom. I want to use learning techniques and tools that engage the children with relevant to life lessons that promote success and motivation. As a first-year teacher, I don't have the means to do this to the full potential these children deserve. I want my walls to have faces they relate to and look up to. I want struggling students to have the capacity to learn in a way that works for them. I want the classroom to feel as though it is a part of theirs. Diversity is a gift and will be embraced and shared. Neurodiverse students should have the means to use their thinking outside the box way of learning to benefit them. Gender inclusiveness is a vital part of community and belonging. Differently-abled children will know they are a part of our classroom family. Gifted learners should be challenged - not just be given more work to do. Every student is unique, important, and has a story. Children will get to their fullest potential when they come to a low-risk, challenging classroom that they feel a part of. A huge part of this also includes large motor activities we can do in the classroom to help stay focused and avoid potential disruptions. Children don't belong sitting all day long - their brains need the movement as do the kiddos themselves. I also believe there should be productive play (such as dramatic play) to practice using social skills appropriately. Kindergarteners need this interaction tremendously!!
