Breakout Boxes can be thought of as mini "escape rooms", students have to answer questions to get the keys to the locks on the box in order to get the the prize inside. This is a great tool to use as a review, instead of just using traditional paper reviewing systems. Students will be working together and sharing what they know to fix the problem in front of them. This will also help them with their critical thinking skills because they will be forced to think outside of the box to find the solution, not just know the answer to a science question. The competition also gives the students motivation to try and finish the tasks as possible, meaning they are more likely to try and work through all the steps to get to the end. While the kids do love playing Kahoot on Friday's even that can become overused and the kids lose interest. These breakout boxes will help put variety in my class. Keeping the kids interesting in the material and using their knowledge in a more applied setting. One of the things students have the hardest time with is using the material they learn in class in any situation other than just on a test or worksheet. These boxes will take them out of their comfort zone, while also adding some fun into the mix!
