Collaborative spaces allow students to brainstorm and sketch ideas, as they work in teams to solve problems. These spaces allow for ideation sketches of egg drop projects, organizing teams, and documenting data as teams test their creative solutions. As a part of my engineering curriculum, students are challenged with not only the academic knowledge needed to design real-world solutions, but the practical skills needed to make their designs a reality. This project offers a unique opportunity to teach my students about the chemical compounds needed for dry-erase paint, the methodology needed for successful application, and the practical and safety skills needed to execute the job. This project allows them to have a hand in creating their new physical space and take ownership of it. It should bring a sense of pride and accomplishment for them, knowing they made something “real” that they and future students will continue to use for years to come.
